U.S. Census 2010 Scam Alert

U.S. Census Scam Alert - Ask for ID and Badge!

While you must be cooperative with the 2010 U.S. Census, it is just as important you take a few precautions to protect yourself. Scammers disguised as U.S. Census Workers are trying to take advantage of the opportunity to poll your personal financial information.

A few things to keep in mind to protect yourself from con artists:

  • Any request for census information from the Census Bureau will be clearly identified as coming from the U.S. Census Bureau and as OFFICIAL BUSINESS of the United States. Before your household receives a mailed form, a phone call or a visit from the Census Bureau, you will be given a few days notice with a letter from the Census Bureau Director.
  • If a U.S. Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a handheld GPS device, a Census Bureau canvas bag and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering their questions. However, you should never invite anyone you don’t know into your home and U.S. Census Workers will never ask to enter your home.
  • Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information. Do not give your Social Security number, credit card or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the U.S. Census. While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range, it will not ask for Social Security, bank account or credit card numbers, tax information, nor will employees solicit donations. A list of questions the Census Workers will ask can be found on the U.S. Census website, however forms cannot be filled out online.
  • Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail or in person at home. However, they will not contact you by e-mail, so be on the look out for e-mail scams impersonating the Census. Never click on a link or open any attachments in an e-mail that are supposedly from the U.S. Census Bureau.

If you are still unsure about the identity of a U.S. Census worker after checking their badge and ID, call the Regional Census Center toll free at (425)-908-3000 to confirm they are employed by the Census Bureau.
